Lymphatic drainage is a specific therapeutic treatment that requires
specialized training. Our lymph system is a specialized component of the
circulatory system responsible for waste disposal and immune response.
Lymph and blood are very similar, except lymph does not have red blood cells
or platelets, has a slightly higher protein content, and carries bacteria and
other debris. Lymph is the interstitial (around the cell) fluid. Lymph moves
throughout the body via pressure exerted by respiration, peristalsis of the large
intestine, the compression of muscles, and the pull of the skin and fascia
during movement.
Lymphatic drainage is very appropriate for clients who are generally healthy. In
today's society we are moving less and require support for our lymphatic flow.
If you are inactive, consume junk food and beverages, and drink small amounts
of water you are a prime candidate for lymphatic drainage. Also, if you
recently have recovered from a viral or bacterial infection or cold your lymph
system is probably overloaded. This is a prime time for you to consider this
treatment to reverse the effects of the stress on your system.
Lymphatic drainage is a rhythmic, gentle, passive and active joint movement
massage to reproduce the body's normal means of pumping lymph. The client
supports the process with deep slow breathing.
