| An Introduction to Detoxification by Dr. Gallivan We live in a world surrounded by toxins. Every year, 200 new chemicals will be released on the market, some not fully tested for their effect on the human body. Some are so called PBT's or Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxins, meaning they remain in the environment and our food chain for a long time. These are substances such as DDT, PCB's, dioxins and plasticizers. Their effects range from immunotoxicity to endocrine (hormonal) disruption and some may even be carcinogenic (cancer causing). This is compounded by the "grasshopper effect", where toxins move from temperate to cold climates. This means even if you don't live next door to a pollution producing factory, we are not immune from its effects. Toxins will find us. Endogenous toxins (those that originate within our bodies) are also created in the form of end products of our own metabolism, such as histamine and adrenaline. If these are not detoxified and excreted they can be just as harmful as external toxins. The human body, being an open energetic system will react in a certain fashion (illness or disease) until the toxin is eliminated and balance is restored. The main detox systems of the human body are the liver, kidney, mucous membranes (respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary systems) and the skin. Detoxifying ability is dependent on various factors such as genetics, gender, history and nutritional status of the patient. Our bodies can handle only so many toxins, and was not built to handle the many man- made toxins in our environment today. It needs help. The human body needs to be working at optimum function or illness may develop. What type of results could you expect from a good detoxification program? My patients have confirmed the following results:
This is only a fraction of what you may expect to experience. Here are some suggestions to help strengthen the body's response to toxins. 1. Utilize pure drinking water - Avoid tap water. If you use bottled water, I recommend Fiji Water. A good purifying system such as Nikken's Pimag Water System is also an excellent choice. 2. Diet - Fresh, raw, organic foods are best. Avoid refined white bread, soda, sugar, fried, fatty or processed foods along with nicotine and alcohol as much as possible. 3. Exercise - Exercising stimulates body systems so that metabolic efficiency is stepped up 4. Chiropractic care - A properly aligned musculoskeletal system is essential for optimal health 5. Vitamin Supplements - A good multivitamin is essential in today's nutritionally depleted foods 6. Detoxification programs - Working in conjunction with the previously mentioned ideas is necessary to detoxify what has already claimed a foothold in your body. The best detoxification programs are those that work to naturally and gently with the body's own detoxification centers.
